The report « Globalization of Resistance : the state of struggles »

« The Globalization of Resistance : the state of struggles » is an annual report describing and analyzing the development of social struggles on all five continents. It provides an enlightening insight into the dynamics of citizen movements and networks, as well as the issues they face, and their actions are situated in the social, political, economic and cultural contexts that have been severely affectyed by neoliberal globalization. From the Argentinian piqueteros to the Assembly of the Poor of Bangkok, from the Forum against Privatization of Johannesburg to the difficulties in constructing a a European social movement, the report gives a global view of resistance, interspersed by analyses providing the interpretative framework needed to understand its origins, development and strategies in the various countries.

« The Globalization of Resistance » is the result of an unprecedented cooperation between intellectuals and activists. Their horizons are sometimes very different but they share the same conviction : that an understanding of and opening up to other actors and contexts are the primary prerequisites for forming trans-border coalitions capable of putting « globalization from below » into practice. It also provides a forum for debates on the strategic orientations of the « movement of the movements » and the alternative development strategies formulated in the new transnational public spaces created by the world and regional social forums. For, contrary to the impression conveyed by the media, the globalization of resistance is not a simplistic, ephemeral political phenomenon. It has its roots and raison d’être in situations of appalling collective suffering, the causes of which are very much still with us. The movement is being reinforced and expanded as an increasing number of citizens become aware of the dead-end of the present world model and recognize the mechanisms and power relationships that underpin it. It is however rooted in very different social and cultural realities which is why it becomes more complex as it expands. This is also the reason why the movement contains many different currents of thought, which are sometimes contradictory but always motivated by a genuine desire for convergence. In sum, the report tries to identify and decode the actors, issues, strategies and debates of this other globalization.
